Manti Te'o, the Notre Dame football star who was the apparent victim of a dead fake girlfriend hoax, will do his big post-scandal interview with Katie Couric, instead of Oprah, later this week. It'll be taped at an undisclosed time and location and is set to air on Thursday on ABC.
Meanwhile, the alleged man behind the hoax is also considering going public. Ronaiah Tuiasospopo has been identified as the hoaxer who created the fake girlfriend with whom Te'o carried on an online and phone relationship with before her supposed death in fall.
According to Peter Navy Tuiasopopo, Ronaiah's uncle, the family has hired an attorney and plans to hold a powwow this week to figure out how Ronaiah might be able to publicly come clean about the hoax. The uncle said, "We want to do it right."
Meanwhile, in an off-camera interview with ESPN on Friday, Te'o said that he received an apology from Ronaiah via direct message on Twitter, which is ironic, but it's the same social network Ronaiah allegedly communicated with Te'o through when he was pretending to be his girlfriend.
