At least 233 people were killed when a packed nightclub in Santa Maria, Brazil caught fire early Sunday morning. Of the dead, 185 have been identified so far.

Many of the club-goers died of apparent smoke inhalation while others were trampled in the rush for the doors. More than 90 people have been hospitalized, including 14 with severe burns.

About 2,000 people were inside the club, double the maximum capacity, when the fire started by pyrotechnics used onstage and it quickly spread to the ceiling.

The incident is reminiscent of the 2003 nightclub fire at a Rhode Island nightclub in which pyrotechnics used by the rock band Great White started a fire that killed 100.
