At least 19 people were killed when a hot air balloon carrying them over Luxor, Egypt caught fire and crashed on Tuesday. It's one of the world's worst balloon accidents, with witnesses seeing some of the passengers jump 1,000 feet to their death to escape the flames in balloon's basket.

However, hot air balloons are usually fairly safe. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, there have been 760 hot air balloon accidents in the U.S. as well as two overseas since 1964, but most of them haven't been fatal.

Air safety expert Carl Holden of Australia said, "People have been flying hot air balloons safely, since 1783 to be exact, long before the Wright Brother's first successful powered flight in 1903."
